College is Ideal Venue For Annual Research Meeting

The Schornack Group at the Sainsbury Laboratory, University of Cambridge studies how plants interact with the microbes around them and how this leads to plant diseases, plant resistance or a mutually beneficial symbiosis between plants and microbes. Each year, they host a one-day meeting to strengthen collaboration among three research teams in the field. Cambridge proved to be the perfect location offering excellent transport links to both Norwich and London and the iconic Downing College offering an inspiring backdrop for innovation and discussion. The day’s activities were rounded off with drinks at an iconic Cambridge brewery and then on for an evening meal.
Presentations and activities
The day featured presentations on ongoing research projects as well as interactive sessions and group activities.
In February 2024, the annual event was held at Downing College in the Howard Building, taking place in both the Assembly Room and Drawing Room. The event was organised by Sebastian Schornack, Senior Research Group Leader.
He says: “These meetings are usually attended by 45-50 people from Cambridge, Norwich and London who see them as an excellent opportunity to update each other about ongoing research as well as develop new connections from the groups attending.
“The title for the event is taken from the three team leaders who had the initial idea to establish the annual meetings – with the name SchoBozKa derived from letters of each of their names.
Venue-finding
“This year, as previously, I used the Meet Cambridge service to explore available options for venues which I always find very useful. Information is provided in an accessible way and the team is very supportive and responds to questions quickly.
“This was the second time we held the one-day meeting at Downing and I have also participated as an attendee at other events there. I am very happy with how the events are organised and managed and the team is friendly, attentive and helpful.
“After the meeting we organised a round of drinks at Cambridge Brewhouse followed by dinner at Efes Turkish Restaurant.”
