Judith Sloane, Meet Cambridge’s Deputy Manager, takes a look at what’s happening over the next few months in Cambridge and its surrounds.

If you are planning an autumn meeting in Cambridge, why not share our latest guide with your delegates?

Halloween Ghost Tour

Cambridge may be beautiful in the daylight hours, but it also has its hidden horrors! Spending an hour after your event is over, creeping around the streets of Cambridge at night visiting ghostly spots and listening to scary stories is sure to make you shiver – be warned that these tours are only running at the end of October so be sure to book! Take a look here.

Scudamore’s Halloween Punt Tours

Cambridge is famous for its punting, so why not take a spooky punt tour in aid of Halloween? It’s not as busy on the river in the autumn as in the summer so it’s a great opportunity to really see the beauty of Cambridge and its surrounding villages. If you’re worried about delegates being too chilly, blankets and hot water bottles are provided by punting companies so the weather won’t ruin your tour.

Cambridge Film Festival

This October sees Cambridge’s film festival return from 20th to 27th, celebrating film past, present and future. The festival offers something for everyone with UK premieres, insightful documentaries and much more. Relax and watch open air screenings at some of Cambridge’s most unique and interesting venues including Grantchester Meadows, a beautiful village on the River Cam, and Jesus Green, a popular park located north of central Cambridge… Just remember a coat and maybe an umbrella! Find out more here.

Fireworks Display

Who doesn’t love a fireworks display? Cambridge’s this year takes place on Midsummer Common on Friday 4th November. The event is open from 7:30 and alongside a great display there are lots of food stalls and fair rides to walk round and entertain yourself with whilst you wait. If you find yourself in Cambridge that weekend it’s definitely one to visit. See more here.

Ice Skating

Possibly the most festive activity of them all, this year again will see an ice rink on Parker’s Piece, perfect for people of all ages and accessible into the evening and all weekend. If you don’t fancy skating there is a festive bar serving Mulled Wine and a range of fair rides to entertain yourselves on – it’s also right in the middle of Cambridge so you can finish your day with a bit of present shopping if you fancy it (Wednesday is late night!).

Group Theatre Trips

There are always lots of fabulous shows on at this time of year, and Cambridge Arts Theatre offers great group packages for your delegates. There is a wide range of choices so there will be something for all sorts of groups, plus the option of a theatre tour and discounts on certain performances. It’s very easy to organise as the theatre provide you with a dedicated group booker to handle your booking from beginning to end – even pre-ordering your ice cream and interval drinks! Book tickets and see what’s coming up here or call the box office on 01223 503333 and ask about group bookings.

Winter Fair

If you’d like to experience an alternative side of Cambridge, the first Saturday in December sees the whole stretch of Mill Road close to cars for its Winter Fair. Hundreds of stalls organised by independent businesses line the streets away from the main tourist route, along with live music, a carnival procession and lots of delicious food and drink. This is a really fun event, created to celebrate the richness of life in the neighbourhood. You won’t regret taking a look if you find the time. Find out more here.

If these events have whet your appetite, Cambridge venues are still available for the festive period. Stunning settings, panelled dining rooms and award-winning cuisine are just three reasons why Cambridge Colleges and other unique properties in our portfolio can offer a venue with a difference for your Christmas event.
