From the food on offer to the standards of service provided, The Athenaeum always delivers first-class events. As part of Prestige Venues and Events, The Athenaeum has resources to ensure that at every stage of your event, from the initial enquiry through to the delivery on the day, is exactly as you would expect.

Five versatile spaces are available to hire individually or you may choose to hire the whole venue exclusively. Either way the rooms will inspire and motivate your delegates whether they are attending a small meeting for 10 or a large scale conference for 250.

The inter-linked rooms also make it an ideal venue for exhibitions and when using the venue exclusively there is space for up to 60 exhibitors, with plenty of space for visitors to wander around or network.

Drinks Receptions are also a speciality and the flexibility of the area means the venue can comfortably accommodate up to 250 guests.

The venue is located in the heart of the historic town centre, close to a marvellous array of shops and tourist attractions. From a practical perspective, we can arrange free parking for corporate events at a nearby car park. There is a good local bus and train service and the main A14 lies just 2 miles north of the town.

The Head Chef at The Athenaeum is passionate about food and always takes the time to create unique, delicious menus for every bespoke event by using locally sourced products.

Weddings

The Athenaeum, an iconic building in the heart of Bury St Edmunds, was built in the early 18th century as Assembly Rooms.

Today, the listed building encompasses a choice of spaces for hire. The grandest being the elegant Georgian Ballroom, with its chandeliered ceiling and grand décor, ideal for all wedding related occasions.

This ornately beautiful room is complete with high ceiling, balcony and a sweeping staircase; perfect for that fairy-tale entrance and magical photographs. For more intimate occasions the Lounge or Reading Room are ideal.

From the romantic ceremony through to your evening reception, The Athenaeum would be delighted to create a day you’ll cherish forever.

Did You Know?

  1. The Athenaeum, grade I listed building, recently featured in the David Copperfield adaptation.
  2. Charles Dickens gave readings at The Athenaeum in 1859 and 1861.
  3. The Athenaeum Literary Institute acquired the building in 1854, from which it takes its present name; ‘Athenaeum’.
  4. The Athenaeum has a fair-sized, domed observatory on the roof, containing a telescope.
