With staycations becoming more and more appealing, why not explore a University town this summer? Cambridge is a unique destination and has so much to offer; with international summer schools on pause, many Colleges are opening their doors to B&B guests for the first time this summer.

Fitzwilliam College, also known as a college “on the hill”, is a mere 10 minute walk from the city centre. It offers a true College experience for new guests and nostalgic reminiscence to former students, perhaps even be able to stay in the same room as their student days.

With the 1960s D, E and F staircases project coming to a long-awaited finish, Fitzwilliam College are excited to offer a mix of 42 newly refurbished ensuite and semi ensuite bedrooms to book from the end of July. The architects, RH Partnership, were carefully selected for their expertise in bringing 1960s accommodation up to today’s technical, environmental and social standards. Energy-saving technology and materials are being used to maximise heat retention and to reduce their carbon footprint.

The College stretches over 10-acres between Storey’s Way and Huntington Road. The bedrooms at Fitzwilliam overlook peaceful, well-kept gardens in the traditional courtyard style. One of the biggest outdoor green spaces, Grove and Chapel Lawn, overlooks The Grove, a beautiful Regency house in the grounds, which was occupied by Emma Darwin, wife of Charles Darwin. Walking to the Dining Hall for breakfast, you can spot that the College garden is home to a Ginkgo biloba, a primeval species 270 million years old. Unlike many other Cambridge Colleges, you are allowed to walk on the grass!
