Sophie Able has been appointed to the new role of General Manager of Newmarket Racecourses following a recruitment process, Jockey Club Racecourses announced.

This new role was created on the back of the growth of JCR’s East Region and reports into JCR's East Regional Director, Amy Starkey, who is responsible for the running of Newmarket's Rowley Mile and July Course, Huntingdon, Market Rasen and Nottingham racecourses.

For the last five years Sophie has been based at Newmarket as Head of Sales for JCR's East Region and is a member of the Region's senior management team.

Previously she was Managing Director of JCR's Huntingdon Racecourse for four years from 2008 and is a graduate of both JCR's Management Academy and the British Horseracing Authority graduate scheme. Sophie joined The Jockey Club in 2005 as Commercial Executive at Huntingdon Racecourse.

Sophie Able said, "I am delighted to have been given the opportunity to further develop my career within The Jockey Club. There’s a great team in place who I’m very much looking forward to working with in this new role, staging racedays of fantastic quality and a wide range of events throughout the year. I am passionate about the success of Newmarket Racecourses, its status in the local community and in British Racing. We are lucky to welcome many of the world's finest racehorses, jockeys and trainers to compete on the Flat and we will be working hard to provide them and all our customers with the best possible experience in the years ahead."

Amy Starkey said, "Sophie is extremely talented and, with considerable and varied experience in a number of roles within Jockey Club Racecourses, she is the ideal person to take up the new position of General Manager at Newmarket. She has made a most valuable contribution to the JCR East Region’s senior management team in recent years and has built strong relationships with the whole team in the Group as well as with horsemen, sponsors and other professional and commercial partners. I am very much looking forward to continuing working with Sophie to achieve further growth and success at Newmarket Racecourses."
